GoToAssist alternative: Auffi compared head-to-head

GoToAssist no longer exists under that name — the product is now called LogMeIn Resolve (RescueAssist and GoTo Resolve in between) and is a paid cloud suite for IT helpdesks. Auffi is the opposite model: free for business too, open source (AGPL-3.0), servers in Germany — and the helper just opens auffi.app in a browser and types a 9-digit code, with no account and no license. If you are looking for a GoToAssist alternative for ad-hoc help, this is the honest comparison.

As of October 2026

GoToAssist became LogMeIn Resolve

GoToAssist was originally built by Expertcity, moved to Citrix in 2003 and to LogMeIn in 2017. In 2018 it was renamed RescueAssist, later the remote support ran as part of GoTo Resolve, and today GoTo markets it as LogMeIn Resolve. Plenty of people still search for the old name — and land on a product that has grown from a plain remote support tool into an IT management suite in the meantime: device management, patch management, endpoint protection and ticketing integration are all part of it now.

For IT departments with many devices that is a real advantage. If you just want to look over the shoulder of a customer, a colleague or your parents for a few minutes, you end up paying for a lot of features you will never use.

When LogMeIn Resolve is the better choice

GoToAssist alternative day to day: where the difference shows up

Who pays and who signs in. With LogMeIn Resolve everything hinges on licenses: according to the vendor, plans are priced per month with annual billing, require a minimum number of endpoints, and licenses for on-demand remote support are added depending on the plan. The technician signs in to the console with their account. With Auffi there is no license and, for ad-hoc help, no account — whoever wants to help opens the website.

What the person with the problem has to do. Here the two are closer than you might expect: with LogMeIn Resolve the other side opens a link and downloads an app for real remote control. With Auffi they download the small sharer once, read out the 9-digit code and explicitly confirm every connection. The difference is on the other end of the line.

Who owns the infrastructure. LogMeIn Resolve is a cloud service from a US vendor, with EU data residency as an option. Auffi runs publicly in Frankfurt and can be self-hosted entirely with Docker Compose — signaling and TURN server included. The source code is open on GitHub.

What you do not get. Auffi has no ticketing integration, no device management, no patch rollout and no mobile apps; the shared machine runs Windows or Linux, not macOS. For permanent access there is an unattended mode with paired devices and a password per device — that one needs a free account.

Frequently asked questions

Does GoToAssist still exist?

Not under that name. GoToAssist was renamed RescueAssist in 2018, later ran as GoTo Resolve and is now called LogMeIn Resolve. The vendor is GoTo, headquartered in Boston (USA). So anyone looking for a GoToAssist alternative is effectively comparing against LogMeIn Resolve.

How much does LogMeIn Resolve cost compared to Auffi?

LogMeIn Resolve is paid: according to the vendor, plans are priced per month with annual billing and require a minimum number of endpoints, and licenses for on-demand remote support are added depending on the plan. A free trial is available. Auffi is free for good, for personal and business use, with no license and no trial expiry.

Does the helper need an account with Auffi?

No. For ad-hoc help the helper opens auffi.app in a browser and types the 9-digit code. With LogMeIn Resolve the technician works from a licensed account in the Resolve console.

Where is the data stored with Auffi and with LogMeIn Resolve?

Auffi's public service runs in Germany (Frankfurt), with no third-party trackers and no clear-text IPs in the logs; if you prefer, you can run Auffi entirely yourself. With LogMeIn Resolve, customers choose between global and EU data residency when they create their account; the vendor is a US company and there is no self-hosting.

When is LogMeIn Resolve the better choice?

When you need a helpdesk with several technicians, device management, patch management and ticketing integration, have to support mobile devices, and are happy to pay for those features. Auffi is deliberately leaner: share a screen and control it, nothing else.
